Lab
Sebastian Maas
Exhibition duration
05. February – 12. March 2021
In Lab we show new works by Sebastian Maas, who presents his unusual technique, painting on tarpaulin, in glass boxes. His new series portrays different species of monkeys. These have been tracked down, observed, described, studied, classified and catalogued by humans. Everything needs its order - or also known as pigeonholing. People are looking for the typical. If one translates this into art, one encounters contradiction in the portrait. Here, only the individual and the capturing of his unique persona counts. Sebastian Maas combines these two human characteristics, typifying and the urge for individuality, and translates them into painting. His goal is to portray each monkey, as the only representative of its species, and thus to unite group and individual.
