FBZ art award 2024

Klara Virnich is the winner of the FBZ art award 2024. The 32-year-old artist from Düsseldorf accepted the award, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, on Wednesday (26 June) at the Research and Treatment Center for Mental Health (FBZ)

The work is entitled "Immaculate" - although the artwork seems to defy this very attribute. Deep cracks run through the layer of plastic that the artist has poured over eight canvases in dark green and blue. They are traces of the hammer blows with which the 32-year-old completes many of her works. "I consider something beautiful when it is not flawless," emphasized Klara Virnich at the award ceremony. And this practical approach appealed to the jury, emphasized jury member Tanja Kleine-Quadflieg. She delivered the laudatory speech on Wednesday afternoon on behalf of her colleague Stephan Kaluza.

Klara Virnich's works testified to a longing to "discover new land"; they were characterized by their aesthetics and their potential for surprise. "It was simply the pictures that convinced us - not a lengthy CV or even a provocation or a socially critical concept."

Klara Virnich discovered her special way of working in 2018 during a personal crisis. "I was unhappy with a portrait and wanted to let off some energy. I grabbed a hammer and felt incredibly liberated afterwards," she recalls looking back. The experience of being able to overcome a crisis gave her new strength - and created a personal connection to the FBZ art award, which has always focused on the interplay between art and mental health. "I think the award is very important and am delighted to now be part of the collection at the FBZ."

As a former master student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, she applied to the "DIE GROSSE" jury for the first time as a freelance artist. Of the more than 1,200 applications, she not only made it into the 158 artists who will be exhibiting at the Kunstpalast and NRW-Forum for five weeks in June and July, but also received the sponsorship award for artists.

Originally coming from photography, Anna Stüdeli focused on sculpture during her master's degree at the HFBK and explored in particular the surface behavior of soft materials such as latex, hair, animal skin, modeling clay or foam. Skin-like surfaces, membranes that separate an inside from an outside, and their vulnerability are also at the forefront of her current works, in which photography expands sculpturally in multiple layers.

For her collages, she processes ultra-close-ups of advertising posters in urban spaces in analog form to create new statements. The search for reality behind the advertising messages turns out to be a pixelated something on glued-up advertising paper, applied to billboards and building facades covered with graffiti, stickers and scribbles. Stüdeli throws pop advertising aesthetics back onto the vulnerability of the surface, as if she herself wanted to tear down the boundary between illusion and reality. Sabine Boshamer, HFBK
